The role of Public Health is to prevent illness and promote health, a goal that all of us would want as much as we value fire or police protection. It's just common sense that keeping people healthy is preferable to having to cure them after they get sick. Most of our work is behind the scenes: inspecting restaurants, testing the bathing waters at public beaches and pools, following up on infectious diseases to prevent their spread, promoting and offering timely immunizations, monitoring and prevention of lead poisoning, inspecting daycare centers and schools, and a wide variety of other efforts to limit or prevent disease.

Prevention in Public Health means a lot more than regular medical checkups. A safe water supply, flu shots, self-esteem education, good nutrition, and seat belt use are all examples of prevention activities. Developing programs to reduce violence, cigarette smoking, childhood lead poisoning, or low birth weight babies are also ways to prevent disease. Therefore, Public Health does health education in schools (ask us to come to yours!), we monitor and regulate food establishments, and do community screenings for cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Invite us to come to your work site or health fair. Remember, that although often unnoticed, Public Health is here protecting your health, preventing epidemics, assuring access to health care, reaching out and linking those in need with services, responding to disasters, as well as mobilizing and leading in the development of community action for sound health policy and planning.

Here at the West Haven Health Department, we believe in putting both "Public" and "Health" into Public Health. That is why we have monthly health screenings at senior and community sites. We also take pride in our health counseling when we have the opportunity to train the public with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to take charge of their health. If you are ill, we urge you to go to your doctor, but to empower you with health, that is the major goal of our mission. We are here with support and health education materials for you!
